How to Coach Pee Wee Cheerelading

Coaching Pee Wee Cheerleaders ( normally under age 6 ) is SO MUCH FUN and challenging! Here are some tips that I have learned over my 23+ of coaching:

  1. Learn Their Names – One easy way to learn your team’s names and for them to learn each other’s names is to give your team name tags for the first few practices. Also, try to call on your cheerleaders by name, not only will it help you remember their names, but your cheerleaders will be so excited that you know their name!
  2. At the beginning of each practice, when you call roll, have them team sit in a circle. When you call their name, ask them to answer a different question each class. By having them answer a question, and not just say “here”, you encourage the cheerleaders to talk and to come out of their shell. Great questions include: What is your favorite color, cartoon, movie, ice cream, fruit or favorite animal.
  3. Always count how many cheerleaders you have in your circle and compare that to how many you checked in. You may have 1 or 2 too shy to answer your question, so now is the time to double check who you have at practice.
  4. Put your team in a staggered lines formation to begin your warm up. ALWAYS practice with your team in a formation to give your team some structure and to get them used to being in a formation and not just in a group.
  5. When teaching curriculum, teach for 15 minutes then play a game. Teach another 15 minutes and then play another game. Remember, this age group has a brief attention span so by teaching in 15 minute increments, you will get all of your curriculum done and your team will have fun too!
