How to Motivate Your Team at the End of Practice

Team motivation is ALWAYS a top priority for a great coach. Here are some things you can do at the END of practice to get your athletes feeling great about their practice and excited for the next one:

  1. Always finish your practice with a cool down and a “stretch for flexibility” session. While their muscles are warm, holding their stretches for a little longer and using their breath will increase their flexibility. If you consistently do this at the end of practice, your athletes will see results and get motivated to continue. Also, this session feels great and is a nice way to close the day ????
  2. During your cool down session, YOU try to tell EVERY athlete what was a success for them at that practice and how they individually improved on their skills. Even if it is something small, your compliment will go miles!!!
  3. You can also do a quick compliment circle: just before dismissal, have your team get in a circle and everyone must give a quick compliment to the person next to them about their practice efforts and results.
  4. You can pass out a “cheerleader of the day” recognition award like a “spirit stick”, a stuffed animal mascot, or a necklace that they can wear or hold on to until the next practice. You can take a photo of that cheerleader with the award and post it on your team website or team facebook group.
